Le Vigne di Raito is located in the town of Raito, a municipality of Vietri sul Mare. Located next door to Salerno, Vietri sul Mare is known to the world for its ceramics production and artists.
The vineyard, which has been certified biologic/biodynamic, is immersed in the typical Mediterranean vegetation, characterized by the presence of lemons, ancient olive trees, strawberry trees, viburnum, oaks, myrtles, laurel, pomegranates, and more. It is rich in local microfauna.
The areas cultivated with grapevines cover almost 2 hectares of the property. The grapevines are cultivated on terraces, a planting method typical to the Amalfi Coast, which are bordered by “macere” – a term used to refer to the vertical retaining walls, built to allow the full use of the underlying ground. These strips of land, torn from the rock in the course of time, are difficult to access and require manual work processes only. On the property there are some old rural buildings which are being renovated.
The vineyard belongs to the “Costa d’Amalfi” DOC region and is cultivated using the Guyot method. The grapes are from Aglianico and Piedirosso variety with a density of approximately 3500 plants per hectare.
My first reaction on visiting Raito, overlooking the beautiful coast of Vietri sul Mare, was love at first sight, the kind of passion that mixes up your life and irrevocably changes it.
Thus, in 2001, I found myself owning two hectares of half-abandoned land. I rolled up my sleeves and started working to restore the site, endeavoring to fully respect both the landscape and environment and decided to plant a vineyard.
I learned that in the past the property had been known as “St. Vito ad Torcle” (from the Latin “torculum”, or press) and that there was a particular vocation for the production of grapes and citrus fruits. Therefore, after consulting with expert enologists and agronomists I decided to plant a very area-specific vineyard with ambitious goal to produce high-quality wine that would express all the fragrances and flavors that this land, which is constantly embraced by the sun, has to offer.
After years of hard work we finally reached our first objective in 2007, when we produced our first red wine called “Ragis Rosso 07“. The wine was made from Aglianico and Piedirosso grapes grown exclusively on our property which, in the meantime, had become an agricultural farm called Le Vigne di Raito (The Vineyards of Raito).
Raito, the pride of the city of Vietri sul Mare, enjoys a magnificent view over the Gulf of Salerno and is considered a natural paradise of health between the mountains and the sea.
“Raito Salus infirmorum” (benefit for the sick) is the writing that appears on the ceramic panel placed at the beginning of the road, climbing up the hill, leading to Raito.
Alfonso Gatto, an illustrious poet from Salerno, called it “a sweet country for the winters, good for the shade, good for the sun, good for the sick.” Raito, also called “the throne of the sun,” is nestled on the hill between the blue of the sea at its feet and the green of the mountains that surround it, and a nearly constant clear sky.
